BAER Hearing Tests

Comprehensive Deafness Testing for Your Pet

St. Francis Animal Hospital of Columbia is one of the few testing centers in the area which offers the BAER hearing test to determine potential deafness, brain stem disease, or middle ear disease.

  • BAER test for 1 patient – $189
  • BAER test for 2 patients – $100 per patient
  • BAER test for 3 or more patients – $70 per patient

Hearing Evaluation

The BAER test is ideal for identifying deafness in breeds predisposed to hearing loss such as:

  • Australian Cattle Dog
  • Australian Shepherd
  • Bull Terrier
  • Catahoula Leopard Dog
  • Dalmatian
  • English Cocker Spaniel
  • English Setter

We typically test puppies/kittens at 5 – 6 weeks of age.  Older puppies/kittens and adults are also tested and may require sedation.  Each ear is tested independently: a graph is generated for each ear defining whether the patient is deaf in one ear, both ears or no ears.  Deafness in puppies and kittens is genetic therefore partially or fully deaf dogs should be removed from breeding programs.

Please call the office to set up and appointment.

We can schedule appointments to test an entire litter in one visit, and there is no office visit charge!
